Q: What is the closing data for Festival entries?

Q: The motto of the 2013 Festival is »Ornamental Dances«. Must all entries relate to this?
A: Not really. Theme, style and content of an entry may be chosen at liberty. The motto is merely intended as a suggestion and can be interpreted in many ways, as it was the case with the mottos of the previous years, viz »Bauhaus in the Stars« (2010), »VisuaLiszt« (2011) and »Dissolving Space« (2012).
Q: Will there be a special »Ornamental Dances« Award? Will it include prize money?
A: Such an award will be conferred if there are entries related to the motto that deserve it. So far, there is no prize money. The organizers set their hopes on sponsors, not least because in 2013 Thuringia commemorates the 150th birthday of Henry van de Velde, who was a master of ornament, among other things.
Q: Will there be FullDome Awards again in 2013?
A: There will. As in the previous years, Carl Zeiss AG donates three FullDome Awards, each with a prize money of €500: the Creative, Performance and Audience Awards. They’ll exclusively go to student entries.
Q: What are the criteria for granting FullDome Awards, and who decides who’ll get them?
A: The Performance Award goes to a clip distinguished by its technical quality and craftsmanship. The Creative Award rewards a clip for its originality and creative approach. The clips winning the Creative and Performance Awards will be picked by an independent jury of media experts. (See the website for the jury of the previous years). The jurors will jointly see all the shows shortlisted by the Festival Organizers and decide on the Performance and Creative Awards by a simple majority of votes.
Q: So what about the Audience Award?
A: This will be exclusively awarded by ballots cast by the audience present at the Festival Gala on June 1. The audience can select from the finalist clips preselected by the Festival Organizers and shown in full length at the Gala, after the winners of the Performance and Creative Awards have been made known to them. The audience is free to grant the Audience Award to any of the clips preselected, including the ones that have already got one of the other awards. Again, the Audience Award exclusively goes to a student entry.
Q: Will there be any additional awards in 2013?
A: Yes, there will. As the spectrum of fulldome productions is constantly diversifying, shows outstanding by a variety of criteria can earn extra awards. These are intended to turn the attention of producers, jurors and audience to particular qualities that have evolved in the fulldome medium:
• Best Narrative
• Best Use of Humor
• Best Science Visualization
• Best Emphasis on Emotion
• Best Use of Real Film
• Best Use of 3D Animation
• Best in Art and Experimentation
• Best of New Starter – (first year university students’ shows)
Q: Should entrants contend for any of these categories?
A: No. It’s up to the jury to decide whether an outstanding show is eligible for any of these special awards. This applies to all entrants, whether professionals, independent persons or students.
Q: I heard that there’ll be a special 360-degree Audio Award in 2013?
A: That’s correct. This is another contest open to all producers. The entry requirements for the Spatial Audio Award are described in a supplement to the Submission Guidelines. Interest in the capabilities of 360-degree audio production has been growing since the “Spatial Sound Wave” system developed by the Fraunhofer IDMT in Ilmenau was installed at Jena’s Zeiss-Planetarium. The 2013 Festival will be the first to pay tribute to this development.
Q: Will full-length feature shows be presented and get awards in 2013 again?
A: Yes. The presentation of a limited number of new, professionally made fulldome shows is now a permanent ingredient of the FullDome Festival. The shows to be presented will be selected by the organizers, who’ll also decide upon the Honorable Awards.
Q: Will there be workshops, lectures and making-of sessions again?
A: There will.
Q: Will there be a Festival Lounge again, with time for eating, drinking, talking and informal networking in breaks between the shows?
A: Of course.

Q: Das Motto des 2013 Festivals lautet »Ornamental Dances«. Müssen sich alle Einsendungen darauf beziehen?
A: Nein. Die Wahl von Thema, Stil, und Inhalt der Fulldome-Shows ist frei. Das Motto »Ornamental Dances« ist eine Anregung, die viele Interpretationen erlaubt, so wie es in den vergangenen Jahren mit »Bauhaus in den Sternen« (2010), »VisuaLiszt« (2011) und »Raumauflösung« (2012) der Fall war.
Q: Wird es einen »Ornamental Dances« Award geben? Ist er dotiert?
A: Ein solcher Award wird verliehen, wenn preiswürdige Beiträge zum Thema eingereicht werden. Noch ist dieser Award undotiert. Die Organisatoren hoffen auf Sponsoren, nicht zuletzt, weil 2013 in Thüringen des 150. Geburtstages von Henry van de Velde gedacht wird, der u.a. ein Meister des Ornaments war.
Q: Wird es 2013 wieder dotierte FullDome-Awards geben?
A: Ja. Wie in den Vorjahren, stiftet die Carl Zeiss AG drei mit jeweils 500 Euro dotierte FullDome-Awards: den Creative-, Performance- und Audience-Award. Diese werden ausschließlich an studentische Produzenten vergeben.
Q: Nach welchen Kriterien werden die FullDome-Awards vergeben und wer entscheidet darüber?
A: Mit dem Performance-Award wird eine Show ausgezeichnet, bei der die technische und handwerkliche Ausführung besonders gelungen ist. Der Creative-Award prämiert die Originalität und den kreativen Ansatz einer Show. Über die Vergabe der Creative-, und Performance-Awards entscheidet eine unabhängige Jury aus Medienexperten. Die Jury-Mitglieder sehen sich alle von den Festival-Organisatoren für die Jurywertung vorausgewählten Shows gemeinsam an und entscheiden mit einfacher Mehrheit über die Performance- und Creative-Awards.
Q: Und der Audience-Award?
A: Über den Audience-Award entscheidet ausschließlich das bei der Festival-Gala am 1. Juni anwesende Publikum per Stimmkarte. Zur Auswahl stehen die von den Festivalorganisatoren ausgewählten „Finalists“, die bei der Festival-Gala in voller Länge gezeigt werden. Zuvor wird bekannt gemacht, wer die Performance- und Creative-Awards bekommen hat. Das Publikum kann mit der Stimmenmehrheit entweder einem bereits prämierten Clip zum weiteren Preis verhelfen oder einem anderen Clip den Audience-Award zusprechen. Auch hier gilt, der Preis geht ausschließlich an eine studentische Produktion.
Q: Wird es 2013 darüber hinaus noch zusätzliche Awards geben?
A: Ja. Da sich das Spektrum der FullDome-Produktionen immer weiter ausdifferenziert, sollen herausragende Shows mit zusätzlichen Awards ausgezeichnet werden. Um die Shows einheitlich bewerten zu können, wurden Kriterien benannt. Sie sollen das Augenmerk von Produzenten, Jury und dem Publikum auf die Stärken richten, die sich im Fulldome-Genre entwickelt haben:

A: Nein. Die Jury entscheidet, ob herausragende Shows für einen Spezial-Award in diesen Kategorien in Frage kommen. Das bezieht sich auf alle Einsender, unabhängig vom professionellen, unabhängigen oder studentischen Background.
Q: 2013 gibt es auch einen speziellen 360-Grad Audio Award?
A: Ja. Die Teilnahme ist ebenfalls offen für alle Produzenten. Die Teilnahmebedingungen für den Spatial Audio Award sind als Ergänzung der Submission Guidelines beschrieben. Seit im Zeiss-Planetarium Jena das beim Fraunhofer IDMT in Ilmenau entwickelte „Spatial Sound Wave“ System installiert ist, wächst das Interesse an den Möglichkeiten der 360-Grad Audioproduktion. Diese werden beim Festival 2013 erstmals gewürdigt.
Q: Werden 2013 auch Full-length Feature Shows gezeigt und prämiert?
A: Ja. Die Präsentation eine begrenzten Anzahl neuer, professionell produzierter Fulldome-Shows ist nun ein fester Bestandteil des Festival-Programms. Die Auswahl, wann welche Shows gezeigt werden, nehmen die Organisatoren vor, die auch über die Honorable Awards entscheiden.
Q: Wird es wieder Workshops, Vorträgen und Making-of Sessions geben?
A: Ja.
Q: Wird es wieder eine Festival-Lounge geben und zwischen den Shows Gelegenheit für Essen und Trinken, Gespräche und informelles Networking?
A: Ja, ohne dem kein FullDome-Festival!
